Description A field experiment was conducted during kharif 2005 at Department of Horticulture,
Main Agricultural Research Station, University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad, to study
the genetic variability, correlation and path analysis of capsicum. The experiment consisting
19 genotypes of capsicum was laid out in randomized block design with 3 replication.
The analysis of variance revealed the experience of wide range of variation among the
genotypes. The average fruit weight, pericarp weight, seed weight, number of fruits per plant,
yield per plant, number of secondary branches and plant spread were having higher
magnitude of genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation indicating these genotypes
varied more widely for these characters, revealing great scope for selection.
The characters like number of secondary branches per plant, pericarp weight, average
weight of the fruit and number of fruits per plant had higher heritability (bs) coupled with
high genetic advance which shows that characters could be compared through simile section
procedures. Fruit yield per plant was highly and positively correlated with average fruit
weight and pericarp weight and plant spread at the genotypic level. The genotypic path
analysis revealed that the seed weight per fruit had the maximum positive direct effect
followed by number of fruits per plant, plant height, number of secondary branches and
average fruit weight suggesting direct selection through these traits will be effective in
improving the yield of capsicum.
Among the 19 genotypes, evaluated genotypes were high yielding compared to check
(California Wonder) viz., 3bspc, 1cpsc, 4spc, BGM-1 and 3cspc showed significantly higher
fruit yield over the check. These superior genotypes were high yielding but on par with the
check for the characters like pericarp weight and average fruit weight.
