Description The present investigation entitled “STUDIES ON THE EFFECT OF SOWING DATES AND SPACING ON GROWTH AND ROOT YIELD OF RADISH (Raphanus sativus L.) cv. PUSA CHETKI” was carried out in Rabi 2010-2011 at College of Horticulture, Venkataramannagudem, Andhra Pradesh Horticultural University, West Godavari (Dist.)
Present study includes 12 treatments each replicated thrice in Factorial Randomized Block Design. The treatments included four levels of sowing dates (1st October, 15th October, 1st November and 15th November) and three levels of spacing (45x10 cm, 45x20 cm and 45x30 cm).
The results revealed that the radish cv. Pusa Chetki responded well to sowing dates as well as plant spacing. The vegetative parameter like plant height was favorably influenced by sowing date D1 (1st October) and a plant spacing of 45x10 cm (S1). Whereas, others like days to germination, germination percentage, number of leaves per plant (15, 30, 45 and 60 DAS), leaf area (at 30, 45 and 60 DAS), root-shoot ratio (at 60 DAS) and plant weight (60 DAS) were recorded maximum with sowing date D1 (1st October) and plant spacing S3 (45x30 cm). The number of days taken to root maturity was found to be minimum with the delayed sowing i.e., (D4-15th November) and closer spacing i.e., (S1-45x10 cm).
The yield and yield attributing characters like root length, root yield plot1 and root yield ha-1 showed better expression with early sowing (D1-1st October) and closer spacing (S1-45x10 cm). However, the root girth and root weight were found significantly superior with the early sowing (D1-1st October) and wider spacing (S3-45x 30cm). Physiological disorders like cracking, splitting and root forking were found to be maximum with the delayed sowing (D4-15th November) and closer spacing (S1-45x10 cm).
The interaction effect of sowing dates and spacing were found non-significant with plant height (at 15, 30 and 60 DAS), leaf area at (15 DAS), root-shoot ratio at (15, 30 and 45 DAS), root length (at 15, 30, 45 and 60 DAS), days to maturity and disorders like cracking and splitting. Significant differences were observed in days to germination, germination percentage, plant height (at 45 days) and root yield ha-1 with the treatmental combination of (D1-1st October + S1-45x10 cm). However, number of leaves (15, 30, 45 and 60 DAS), leaf area (at 30, 45 and 60 DAS), root-shoot ratio at (60 DAS), plant weight (at 60 DAS), root girth and root weight (at 60 DAS) were found to be significant with treatmental combination of (D1-1st October + S3-45x30 cm). The maximum root forking was observed with treatmental combination of (D4-15th November + S1-45x10 cm).
