Working women in different religions show different level of satisfaction and stress with regard to their occupations. In muslim community the role of the woman is balanced but fair. Women has been removed from the burden of supporting herself.This responsibility given to the men in her life, her father and her brothers and even on the government, if the other two are not available. If she does not want to work, she does not have to. She is free to spend her time raising her children and attending to her family, social and religious life. However, if women want to work, she is not forbidden to do so. The ultimate goal of each individual is life satisfaction and role satisfaction forms the major part, based on role theory people experiences more conflicts when they are involved in multiple roles. Role fulfillment is defined as the sum total of perceptions of satisfaction of an individual in various roles such as marital, family, social, recreational and work/ job life. Role stress has been defined as the degree of incompatibility of expectations communicated to a focal person by his role giver (Khan,1964),Pareek(1991)definition of role stress indicates that there are inherent problems of role, therefore stress is evitable. In the recent years with the increased pace of urbanization and modernization women from different religion have entered different occupations, which may lead to different level of fulfillment and stress. Hence, the present study is taken up with the objectives to study the role fulfillment and role stress of working and non-working muslim women. The objectives of the study are as follows to study the role fulfillment and role stress of working and non-working muslim women. To study the differences between working and non- working muslim women regarding role fulfillment and role stress. To study the relative magnitude of role fulfillment and role stress of working and non-working muslim xi women. To study the relationship of self and family variables with regard to the role fulfillment and role stress. Ex-post facto research design was adopted for the present study. The total size of the sample was 100 which included 50 working muslim women, 50 non-working muslim women from twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.The sample selected was from muslim community, married who were in the age range of 25-45 years with minimum one child. An interview schedule was developed by modifying the extended satisfaction with life scale (ESWLS) developed by Bernard S.Gorman (1996). In the present study, five domains viz., marital, family, recreational, social and job/ work life were taken with three point continuum to measure the role fulfillment and role stress of working and non-working muslim women. The scale measuring the relative magnitude of role fulfillment and role stress contains 85 items that is rated on the five point continuum. The results of the study revealed that majority of the working muslim women were in the age range of 40-45 years. Majority of the non-working muslim women were in the age range of 25-30 years. The age range of working muslim women were higher than that of non-working muslim women. Nearly half of the working muslim women were post graduates and non-working muslim women were intermediate. Most of the working muslim women income range was above Rs 15,000.The majority of working women had a length of service of 8 years and above. Majority of working muslim women and non-working muslim women had duration of married life of 10 years and above. Most of the spouses of both working and non-working muslim women were post graduates and employed. Most of the spouses of both working and non-working muslim women had income range of Rs 15,000 and above. Majority of working and non- working muslim women had adequate spousal support. More than half of working and non-working muslim women had joint family. Most of working women had medium size family and non-working had big size of family. Both working and non-working muslim women had family income of range of more than Rs15,000. Nearly half of working and non-working muslim women had more than two children. Both working and non-working muslim women were on par with each other with regard to role fulfillment in marital life, which was not significant. Non-working women had more role fulfillment than working women in family life, recreational life and social life, the difference was found to be significant in these areas. Working women had more role fulfillment than non-working muslim women in domain of job/ work life, the difference was not significant. Both working and non-working muslim women did not express stress in marital life, which was not significant. There was no significant difference found between working and non-working women with reference to role stress in family life. Both working and non-working muslim women had equal stress in recreational life, the difference was not found to be significant. Both working and non-working muslim women had equal stress in social life, the difference was not found to be significant. Non-working muslim women had stress in work life, than working muslim women in job/ work life, the difference was found to be significant. However working muslim women were found to be had higher level of stress in job life. The relative magnitude of fulfillment was more than stress in marital life, family life, recreational life and social life except work life of non-working muslim women. However non-working muslim women expressed higher level of stress in work life. Majority of the respondents had ratio of satisfaction to stress was 75 percent stress and xii 25 percent stress in their role performance in the domains of marital life, family life, recreational life and social life. In job/ work life majority of the respondents had ratio of satisfaction to stress is 75 percent and 25 percent . Age had not shown any significant relationship with role fulfillment and role stress of working and non-working muslim women. As education level increased, role stress is decreased. Duration of marriage had not shown any significant relationship with role fulfillment, with regard to role stress duration of marriage had shown significant relationship. As duration of marriage is increased, the level of role stress is decreased. Monthly income of the family had no significant relationship with role fulfillment and role stress of working and non-working muslim women. Spousal education had not shown any significant relationship with role fulfillment, with regard to role stress spousal education had shown significant relationship. As spousal educational level is increased, the level of role stress is decreased. Occupation of spouse had not shown any significant relationship with role fulfillment and role stress of working and non-working muslim women. Spousal support had not shown any significant relationship with role fulfillment, with regard to role stress spousal support had shown significant relationship. As spousal support is increased, the level of role stress is decreased.Type of family had shown significant relationship with role fulfillment and role stress of working and non-working Muslim women. The larger the family the greater the role fulfillment and role stress.As the family size increased, the level of role fulfillment and role stress increased.Number of children had no significant relationship with role fulfillment, with regard to role stress there is a significant relationship. As, the number of children increased, the role stress increased. From the present study it was concluded that non-working muslim women had more role fulfillment than working muslim women and working muslim women had more stress than non-working muslim women. This study helps us to know the factors contributing to study the role fulfillment and role stress of working and non-working muslim women,to study the differences between working and non-working muslim women regarding role fulfillment and role stress,to study the relative magnitude of role fulfillment and role stress of working and non-working muslim women,to study the relationship of self and family variables with regard to the role fulfillment and role stress. This study the role fulfillment and role stress of working and non-working muslim women could create awareness among them to understand how much they were satisfied and expressed stress in their life. |
