Description field experiment was conducted during Kharif - 2013 at AICRP on Dry land
Agriculture Field Unit, UAS, GKVK, Bangalore, to study the “Comparative efficacy of
different moisture conservation practices on productivity and soil moisture dynamics in
finger millet + pigeonpea intercropping system” on red sandy loam soil. The experiment
consisted of ten treatments comprising of maize residue mulch, green leaf manure
application, tank silt application, repeated inter-cultivation in isolation and combinations
of treatments
Green leaf manure with maize residue mulch recorded higher finger millet
equivalent yield (4460 kg ha-1) followed by tank silt with maize residue mulch (4244 kg
ha-1) and tank silt with repeated inter-cultivation (4244 kg ha-1). Similar trends were also
observed in finger millet and pigeonpea yield. This was due to higher growth and yield
attribute viz., plant height, number of tillers, leaf area, grain yield per hill and 1000 grain
weight in case of finger millet and higher plant height, more number of primary branches
per plant, more number of pods per plant and 100 grain weight in pigeonpea.
Higher soil moisture content (6.14 %) and relative leaf water content (75.88 %)
was observed in green leaf manure with maize residue mulch during dry spell. Similar
trend was also observed in nutrient uptake and root character.
The study clearly indicates that green leaf manure or tank silt with maize residue
mulch improves the productivity and moisture holding capacity of the soil.
