Description |
Though urban landscape in cities are human-mediated and often more diverse than that in surrounding environments, little work has been done to characterize the urban landscape in context to public and private gardens. Our aim was to study the changing scenario of urban landscape in Delhi and NCR region by evaluating public and private gardens. Gardens as an urban landscape feature serve many functions as providers of passive and active recreation, environmental benefits, and wildlife habitat centres. For present experiment ten public and private gardens were selected, gardens were characterized for their features, design principles and elements and it has been found that, gardens of Delhi and NCR region depicts both Formal and Informal design styles. Plant diversity is an important determinant of overall urban ecosystem biodiversity, influencing the composition and abundance of associated biota; the studies on plants used in the garden with their use were carried out with scoring and frequency analysis. The percentage composition of plant types was also evaluated for individual gardens. Further studies were also carried out to find different interhorticultural operations, garden resources, garden amenities, garden convenience, softscape, hardscape and features gardens and garden spaces in different gardens. The garden management plays important role to keep gardens personality intact with its aboriginal design concept. The studies conducted on public convenience, garden amenities, softscape, hardscape, and featured gardens proved positive impact on overall garden characterization. These techniques was developed and used in their crude form can be used for any urban or peri-urban gardens around the world. The detailed studies on innovations and changing scenario of urban landscape with reference to public and private gardens was also carried out in context to old and modern era. The designed landscape, critical habitat and recreational parameters were studied with variables like functions, structure, value, use and icon to get precise set of data on which a decision module is given for any future garden innovation studies. These techniques were used for knowing the innovations and to evaluate the changing scenario. New innovations were found from old and modern era and it has been presented effectively in context to designed landscape, critical habitat and garden as a source of The findings suggest that the use of each park has its own characteristics although there appear some similarities within some of the studied use areas. As a result, recommendations for future planning can be suggested. To make future alternative strategies to improvise urban landscape, the gardens were evaluated on the basis of public perceptions towards public and private gardens. The questionnaires were made with essential classes and Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ’s) to evaluate the gardens. It has been found that a garden visitor has sense of necessity and need and gardens are being used differently on how one perceives it. The garden use and need found to be different among and between different activity groups. |
