Description t-8473
A field experiment planting systems and phosphorus management in sole and
intercropped pigeonpea under rainfed conditions was conducted on sandy loam soil at the
research farm of the Division of Agronomy, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi in
two consecutive kharif seasons (2007 and 2008). The treatment combinations comprised two
cropping systems [pigeonpea sole (50 cm row spacing) and pigeonpea + mungbean ] and three
planting systems (uniform row planting, Broad-bed and furrow (BBF) planting and paired row
planting in main plot and four fertility levels (control, 40 kg P2O5/ha, 40 kg P2O5/ha+PSB+VAM
and 80 kg P2O5/ha) in sub-plots. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design with three
replications.
Cropping systems failed to influence the growth, yield attributes, yields (grain and stalk),
harvest index, protein content, nitrogen and phosphorus content and phosphorus uptake in grain
and stalk of pigeonpea. Pigeonpea+ mungbean cropping system recorded significantly higher
pigeonpea equivalent yield (1.71 and 2.01 t/ha), consumptive use (301.70 and 458.60 mm), rate
of moisture use (2.08 and 3.16 mm/day), water-use efficiency (5.33 and 4.04 kg/ha mm) and
fetched higher net return ( 19,440 and 23,130) and B: C ratio (1.97 and 2.23) over sole
pigeonpea in respective years.
Planting systems significantly increased the various growth characters, yield attributing
characters (except 1000-grains weight) and yield (grain and stalk) of pigeonpea and mungbean,
while failed to influence the harvest index. Broad-bed and Furrow planting proved statistically
superior to other planting systems in respect of all the growth and yield attributing character as
well as yield of both the crops but found on par with paired row planting. Broad-bed and furrow
planting being on par with paired row planting recorded significantly higher P uptake (5.59 and
6.55 kg/ha) in grain, stalk (5.66 and 6.22 kg/ha) and their total uptake (11.24 and 12.77 kg/ha) as
compared to uniform row planting. Significantly higher value of consumptive use (299.00 and
454.49 mm), water-use efficiency (4.01 and 5.24 kg/ha mm) and rate of moisture use (2.06 and
3.13 mm/day) were recorded with Broad-bed and furrow (BBF) planting. Broad-bed and furrow
planting fetched highest net return ( 19.99 and 23.47) in 2007-08, respectively.
Application of 80 kg P2O5/ha recorded significantly better growth parameters, yield
attributes (except 1000 grain weight) and yield (grain and stalk) of pigeonpea and mungbean over
control, 40 kg P2O5/ha and found on par with 40 kg P2O5/ha + PSB+VAM. Application of 80 kg
P2O5/ha being on par with 40 kg P2O5/ha+PSB+VAM recorded significantly higher protein (20.31
and 19.76 %), N and P content and total P uptake (12.31 and 13.75 kg/ha) in grain and stalk of
pigeonpea over rest of treatments. 80 kg P2O5/ha being on par with 40 kg P2O5/ha+PSB+VAM,
recorded significantly higher pigeonpea equivalent yield (1.835 and 2.108 t/ha) over rest of
treatments. Consumptive use (306.30 and 465.68 mm), water-use efficiency (5.63 and 4.13 kg/ha
mm) and rate of moisture use (2.11 and 3.21 mm/day) were higher with the highest levels of
fertility (80 kg P2O5/ha) and the lowest being in control. The highest net return ( 21,030 and
23,920) and B: C ratio (2.20 and 2.43) was obtained with 40 kg P2O5/ha+PSB+VAM followed by
80 kg P2O5/ha during 2007-08 experiment.
