Description Studies on the effect of Vesicular and Arbuscular
Mycorrhizae (VAM) on the growth of sorgnum (v~~i. IS 4776) at
various levels of P (0 and 45 kg P2o5 ha- 1) and Zn (0, 5 and
1 O ppm) in a sandy loam soil (alfisol) , . neutral in reaction,,
low in available P and Zn and medium in available N, revealed
that the inoculated mycorrhizae established well in the soil
whether sterilized or not (as seen from the number of spores
I 100 g of soil and per cent infection of sorghum roots).
Application of P was observed to inhibit the mycorrhizal
growth whereas Zn application increased both the number of
spores and percent infection irrespective of whether p was
applied in combination or not.Mycorrhizal inoculation even in the unsterilized
soil showed significant favourable effect, as indicated
by the dry matter accumulation at 60 days after sowing
(on sorghum growth) and on the contents and uptake of P,
K, Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn by sorghum. The effects were more
pronounced in sterilized soil compared to that in
unsterlized soil. Increase in dry matter production with
the application of P and Zn was less compared to that of
mycorrhizal inoculation coupled with P X Zn application
but without simultaneous P application. Mycorrhizal
inoculation changed the negative P and Zn interaction to a
positive one. The available P, K, Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn in the
soil after crop harvest were observed to decrease due to
mycorhizal inoculation showing larger depletion of
nutrients due to better growth of the crop.
