Description Field and laboratory experiments were conducted during kharif, rabi 2009 and
summer 2010 to study the effect of spacings, growth hormones and fertilizer levels on
seed yield and quality. Among the spacings, the spacing of 45 x 15 cm was recorded
maximum seed yield per plant (18.79, 16.19 and 13.09 g) and seed yield per hectare
(18.01, 13.81 and 11.45 q) during kharif, rabi 2009 and summer 2010, respectively.
Among the fertilizer levels, maximum was recorded by RDF + Nutrients (Sodium
molybdate as seed treatment @ 4 g/kg of seed, soil application of ZnSo4 @ 15 kg / ha
and Boron @ 2.5 kg/ha with respect to seed yield per plant (18.72, 15.040 and 12.18 g),
and seed yield per hectare (18.41, 13.78 and 11.21 q) during kharif, rabi 2009 and
summer 2010, respectively. The seed quality parameters were maximum in seeds
produced from plants spaced widely (45 x 15 cm), growth hormone NAA and fertilizer
levels RDF + Nutrients (Sodium molybdate as seed treatment @ 4 g/kg of seed, soil
application of ZnSo4 @ 15 kg / ha and Boron @ 2.5 kg/ha) in all the three seasons.
Among the different stages of maturity, 75 days after anthesis was recorded
maximum fresh weight of seed (4.71, 4.50 and 4.30 g), dry weight of seed (4.05, 3.97 and
3.74 g), seed germination (93.5, 94.7 and 93.5 %) as compared to other maturity stages
viz., 35,45,55 and 65 DAA during kharif, rabi 2009 and summer 2010, respectively.
Among screen aperture sizes 1.4,1.6,1.8,2.0 and 2.2 mm (R) were used, 2.2 mm
(R) recorded highest seed quality parameters viz., seed weight (3.92, 3.22 and 3.16 g) and
germination (90.5, 89.5 and 88.3 %) maximum in seeds graded with 2.2 mm screen size
during kharif, rabi 2009 and summer 2010, respectively.
Seeds packed in polyethylene bag (700 gauge) and treated with malathion @ 2.5
g/kg) recorded highest germination (86.6, 86.3 and 84.6 %) at the end of twelve months
of storage during kharif, rabi 2009 and summer, 2010 respectively.
