Description The present study was carried out at the MARS Dharwad during kharif 2007-08. The
experimental material comprised of 38 lines, 4 testers viz., RAB-70, RAB-32, RAB-7 and PB
and 152 crosses generated by crossing 38 lines with 4 testers in line x tester design. In
another experiment 35 Barbadense genotypes were evaluated for variability parameters.
Thirty eight new hirsutum lines were crossed to four different barbadense testers
which resulted in 152 hybrids. Combining ability was assessed for 38 randomly selected
lines using four common testers through line X tester analysis. The evaluation of F1s was
taken up at MARS, Dhawad during kharif 2007. Heterosis over mid parent and commercial
check DCH 32 revealed that hybrids exhibited heterotic effect for all the characters studied.
Among the 152 interspecific crosses, RAHL-102 X PB exhibited highest per se performance
with significant heterosis over midparent and standard check DCH32 for majority of the yield
components followed by RAHL-104 X RAB-7, RAHL -132 X RAB -7, RAHL -138 X
RAB-32 and RAHL-138 X RAB-7. In general in this experiment, the crosses involving
RAHL-104 and RAHL-132 exhibited positive heterosis over check when crossed with RAB-
7 and PB as tester.
In Barbadense genotypes, among the characters, number of monopodia per plant,
seed cotton yield and number of bolls per plant showed high PCV and GCV indicating that
substantial variability exists for these characters. Higher heritability estimates was recorded
by fibre length, fibre strength, number of monopodia per plant, seed cotton yield and number
of bolls per plant. The mean performance of barbadense genotypes indicated TCB with high
mean value for number of bolls per plant, number of monopodia, boll weight and seed cotton
yield. The genotypes 533M, 534M, ICB-21 and CCB-2 exhibited high fibre length and
strength.
