The present investigation was carried out at Vegetable Research Centre (VRC), G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand during Spring-summer season of 2013 and 2014. The major objectives of the study were to know the extent of heterosis, combining ability and various genetic parameters in tomato. Thirty crosses were evolved in a line x tester mating design with 10 genotypes as female parents (lines) and 3 genotypes as male parents (testers). The hybrids, Selection 06-01 × PT-3 were most promising for earliness exhibiting highest negative heterosis. With respect to plant height, hybrids, ARTH-3 × Punjab Chhuhara and Selection 06-01 × PT-3 were most promising for tallness and dwarfness, respectively. Hybrid combination, CLN2070A × Sweet-72 exhibited most promising results with respect to heterosis for fruit yield per plant, fruit yield per hectare, pericarp thickness, fruit length and fruit width and AC824 × PT-3 for fruit shape index. Most promising hybrid for number of locules was EC-519784 × Punjab Chhuhara which exhibited negative heterosis. The best hybrids with respect to heterosis were ARTH-3 × Sweet-72 for average fruit weight, CLN2070A × PT-3 and PT-8 × Punjab Chhuhara for number of fruits per plant, PT-7 × Sweet-72 for number of seeds per gram, Selection 06-01 × Punjab Chhuhara for TSS. The most promising general combiners were CLN2070A for fruit yield per hectare, fruit yield per plant, number of fruits per plant, number of locules per fruit and pericarp thickness, ARTH-3 for plant height, Average fruit weight, number of seeds per gram and fruit shape index, PT 2007-09 for number of branches per plant, fruit length and fruit width, EC-519784 and CLN2237A for earliness, Selection 06-01 for TSS, PT-8 for Average fruit weight (negative gca), PT-7 for fruit shape index (negative gca) and AC-576 for fruit width (negative gca). Most promising hybrids exhibiting significant sca effects were, CLN2070A × Sweet-72 for fruit yield per hectare, fruit yield per plant, average fruit weight and fruit length, Selection 06-01 × PT-3 for dwarfness, PT-8 × Punjab Chhuhara for tallness, PT-7 × PT-3 for earliness, PT-7 × Punjab Chhuhara for reduced number of seeds per gram, Selection 06-01 × PT-3 for number of fruits per plant and CLN2070A × Punjab Chhuhara for pericarp thickness. The combining ability analysis indicated the importance of both additive and non-additive gene action for different growth, yield and fruit quality characters. |
