Description The present investigation was undertaken with an objective to characterize DUS and
seedling traits in Rabi sorghum landraces of India. Sixty-seven sorghum genotypes and five
varieties were studied for DUS traits. The data were recorded for 33 DUS traits from which 21
traits were qualitative and 12 traits were quantitative. Morphological characters of sorghum were
recorded as per the National Test Guidelines for DUS.
The present study clearly indicated that the sorghum genotypes can be distinguished and
identified by plant and seed morphological characters. Seedling anthocyanin colouration, plant
height, days to 50% flowering, panicle shape, panicle compactness, seed colour, glume colour,
seed shape and seed lustre were the important distinct morphological characters which can be
used by the breeders and farmers for identification of sorghum landraces and can be used in the
varietal improvement programme. Time of panicle emergence ranged from 50 to 72 days, where
the genotypes EP 84, EP 138 and five varieties were noticed very early. The genotype EP 23
(306.76) cm has showed highest plant height and the genotype EC 33 (80.85cm) was with very
long leaf length. The range of variability available in days to 50% flowering and plant height
may be used in the improvement programmes. The genotype PEC 22 (57.11g) showed very high
seed weight followed by EP 117 (54.52g), EP 78 (54.20g), EP 64 (54.73g), EP 42 (53.09g),
SEVS 2 (51.4g) and EP 9 (50.33g). These genotypes can be directly used as variety for its
potential in seed weight.
