Description An investigation was undertaken to study the
available micronutrient status, fixation of zinc and iron,
and to ascertain the effect of various soil properties on the
availability of the micronutrients viz., zinc, iron, copper
and manganese in turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) growing soils of
Guntur District. The soils collected from all the eight
mandals representing the entire turmeric growing area of the
district were found to be normal in reaction, non-saline,
low in available nitrogen, high in available phosphorus and
potassium. The soils were high in calcium carbonate content
and cation exchange capacity. The most dominant exchangeable
cation was calcium followed by magnesium, sodium and
potassium.
Available zinc and iron were found to be deficient
in 57 and 82 per cent of the soil samples respectively.
However, no soil sample was found to be deficient in either
copper or manganese. Available zinc, iron, copper and
manganese contents of the soils exhibited a significant
negative correlation with calcium carbonate, cation exchange
capacity and clay content. Available manganese and copper
. H
showed a significant positive correlation with p and organic
carbon, while no such relationship was observed with
available zinc and iron.
Extent of fixation- of zinc and iron continued to
increase steadily and thereafter the process tended to become
less responsive of the amount added. Zinc and iron fixation
were found to be significantly and positively correlated with
cation exchange capacity, clay and calcium carbonate contents
of the soils.
