Description A field experiment was conducted at the Main Agricultural Research Station,
University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad in Northern Transition Zone of Karnataka on
red sandy loam soil to study the response of fodder cowpea (cv. Swad) to seed rate and
fertilizer level during kharif 2011. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block
design with 12 treatment combinations consisting four seed rates (30, 40, 50 and 60 kg ha-1)
and three levels of fertilizer (15: 30, 25:50, 35: 70 kg N: P2O5 ha-1).
A seed rate of 50 kg ha-1 recorded significantly higher green forage yield (38.51 t ha-1)
and dry matter yield (5.34 t ha-1) over other seed rates. A fertilizer level of 25 kg N and 50 kg
P2O5 ha-1 recorded significantly higher green forage yield (38.04 t ha-1) and dry matter yield
(5.35 t ha-1) over 15 kg N and 30 kg P2O5 ha-1. A treatment combination of 50 kg seeds ha-1
with 25 kg N and 50 kg P2O5 ha-1 recorded higher green forage yield (39.72 t ha-1), dry matter
yield (5.52 t ha-1), per day productivity (640.6 kg ha-1) and crude protein yield (741 kg ha-1)
compared to all other treatment combinations.
A treatment combination of 50 kg seeds ha-1 and 25 kg N and 50 kg P2O5 ha-1 recorded
higher nitrogen uptake (118.5 kg ha-1) and phosphorous uptake (17.5 kg ha-1) compared to all
other treatment combinations.
The available soil N, P and K were not influenced significantly due to seed rate. A
fertilizer level of 25 kg N and 50 kg P2O5 ha-1 recorded significantly higher available N (378.4
kg ha-1) and P (56.8 kg ha-1) over 15 kg N and 30 kg P2O5 ha-1 and was on par with 35 kg N
and 70 kg P2O5 ha-1.
A treatment combination of 50 kg seeds ha-1 and 25 kg N and 50 kg P2O5 ha-1 recorded
significantly higher gross returns (Rs. 39717 ha-1), net returns (Rs. 23258 ha-1) and B:C ratio
(2.41) compared to other treatment combinations.
