Description |
The study “Clinical Studies on Metabolic Diseases in Goats (Capra hircus)” was carried out on 16 hypoglycemic/ketotic, 10 hypocalcaemic and 7 hypomagnesaemic goats on the basis of clinical signs, serum level of glucose, calcium and magnesium. Hospital prevalence of metabolic diseases (clinical ketosis, hypocalcaemia and hypomagnesaemia) in goats was 1.59% (28/1752).Overall prevalence of clinical ketosis, hypocalcaemia and hypomagnesaemia in pre-parturient goats were 4.76%, 2.72% and 2.04%, respectively while prevalence of same diseases in post-parturient stage was 5.69%, 3.79% and 2.53%, respectively. The symptoms of hypoglycemia/ ketosis iincluded fall in milk, loss of appetite, absence of rumination, dystocia and characteristic smell of acetone in urine. Temperature, pulse and respiration rates were in normal range The symptoms of hypocalcaemia noticed fall in milk production, loss of appetite, reluctant to move, sternal recumbency, constipation, hyposensitivity, ruminal stasis and tympany, salivation, pulse impalpable pulse, cold extremities, dry mouth, preferred to lie down occasionally twitching of muscles of hind limbs, shaking of head, and protrusion of tongue. Subnormal body temperature, slightly increased pulse rate and respiration rates were observed The symptoms noticed in hypomagnesaemic goats in present investigation included fall in milk yield, depression, salivation, hyperesthesia, opisthotonous, lateral kink in the neck, teeth grinding, kicking on belly, frothing at the mouth, extension of head and neck, ataxia, recumbency, tetany, seizures, widening and rotation of the eye ball and dilatation of nares. 204 Subnormal body temperature slightly increased pulse rate and respiration rates were observed. Haematological parameters like PCV, TEC, TLC and DLC (monocytes, eosinophils, basophils) in both groups (post-parturient and pre parturient) of these diseases showed non-significant difference between the means of the groups while Hb and lymphocytes showed significantly decrease and significantly increase neutrophils percentage was observed in both groups. Biochemistry of ketotic goats revealed significantly lower serum glucose levels, serum calcium levels, serum phosphorus levels, serum magnesium levels, serum sodium levels and serum potassium levels whereas, significant increase were recorded in BUN and urine ketone bodies. Hypocalcaemic goats revealed significantly lower values of serum glucose, serum albumin serum calcium levels and serum phosphorus whereas, significant increase were recorded in BUN and SGOT. Hypomagnesaemic goats revealed in significantly lower values of serum glucose, serum albumin, serum calcium levels, serum phosphorus and serum magnesium whereas, significant increase BUN and SGOT. Sixteen hypoglycemic goats were treated with 20% dextrose and vitamin B-complex, 10 hypocalcaemic goats were treated with calcium borogluconate (23% solution) and 7 hypomagnesaemic goats were treated with 25% solution magnesium sulphate. All the treated goats were recovered within 4 to 5 days. Rajasthan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Bikaner - 334001 |
