Description |
The present investigation entitled “Evaluation of Chitosan for improving production and quality of orchid (Dendrobium cv. „Sonia‟)” was conducted under protected conditions during the year 2010-11 and 2011-12 at the State Govt. Horticulture Nursery, situated at Chokra Nala, Labhandi, Raipur, being maintained by Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, IGKV, Raipur. The investigation was conducted in two set of experiments on Dedrobium cv. Sonia. In first experiment chitosan was applied as foliar spray on plants and it constituted of total thirty two treatment combinations and an additional untreated control. In second experiment, chitosan was applied directly to the young inflorescence (5 cm long), and it constituted of total twenty four treatments combinations and an additional untreated control. Both the experiments were conducted under factorial completely randomized block design (Factorial CRD) with three factors (product formulation, concentration and number of applications) replicated thrice. Chitosan was sprayed four times at monthly intervals in first experiment and thrice at weekly intervals in second experiment, until runoff using a manual sprayer. Data showed that chitosan significantly affected all the vegetative, floral, yield and quality parameters under study and improvement was recorded with all the treatments as compared to control. Also significant variation was observed among chitosan formulation, their concentrations and application frequencies. From the first experiment it was found that, P2 (chitosan chlorohydrate) was superior in terms of height and number of pseudobulbs, and superior in improving flower quality while, chitosan acetate (P1) recorded better vegetative growth, higher yield and significantly longer vase life of spike. Different concentrations also had significant effect on various vegetative, floral, yield and quality parameters. Among all the chitosan concentrations applied, 7.5 ppm (C3) was found to be beneficial for most characters. A further increase in concentration was found to be detrimental in most of the case. Number of applications of chitosan also significantly affected various vegetative, floral, yield and quality parameters in Dendrobium cv. Sonia. Three applications were found beneficial in most of the cases, and more applications resulted in detrimental effects except in case of longevity of spike on plant, number of days taken from opening to harvest, number of leaves per plant. However, it was non-significant in case of number of florets per spike. From the second experiment, it was found that chitosan application as spray on young inflorescence, significantly improved various floral and quality parameters. The responses were positively related to the applied concentration with the highest peak recorded with 7.5 ppm then it started declining although, they were significantly higher than control. Application frequency also had significant effect on various floral and qualitative characters. Three applications were found to be superior for most of characters. Product and concentration (P X C) interaction was found to be significant for most of characters. Overall, treatment combination P2C2A3 (7.5 ppm chitosan chlorohydrate applied thrice) was found to be superior. The economics calculated based on first experiment showed highest benefit cost ratio (B:C) in treatment combinations P1C3A4 (7.5 ppm chitosan acetate applied four times) and P1C3A3 (7.5 ppm chitosan acetate applied thrice) (3.22 and 3.16, respectively). Apart from all these effects of chitosan, the chitosan treated plants showed lesser disease and pest infestation, especially lesser leaf spots and mites infestation and also resulted in better overall appearance of spikes. |
