Description Two separate field experiments were conducted
to study the effect of root pruning, density of
planting and fertilization on establishment, growth and
uptake of N, P and K by vetiver on a sandy loam
(alfisol) soil at the College Farm, College of
Agriculture, Rajendrangar, Hyderabad, during kharif,
1989. The effect of root pruning(O, 5 and 10 cm)
before planting and fertilization (with and without N
as well as P2o5 each @40 kg ha ) was studied in the
first experimene. While, the effect of number of slips
{2 and.4 slips/hill) with different spacings (7.5 and
15 cm) and fertilization (with and without N as well as
P2o5 each @ 40 kg ha ) was tested in second
experiment.
Pruniny of roots leaving 10 cm resulted in
early and better establishment than either 5 cm root
pruning or no root pruning. Growth and nutrient
uptake by vetiver was more with 10 cm root pruning
either alone or in combination with fertilizers.
Planting 4 slips/hill with closer spacing (7.5
cm) resulted in higher percentage of establishment
and greater growth · than planting 2 slips/hill with
either of the spacings. Fertilization had no significant
effect on establishment but it had marked
influence on growth of vetiver. Uptake of N, P and K
by vetiver was more influenced by the variation in dry
matter production due to different treatments rather
than that of nutrient composition in both the
experiments.
Based on the results obtained, pruning of roots
leaving 10 cm length and planting closely (7.5 cm) with
4 slips/hill was found to be the best to promote early
establishment and growth of vetivr, if it has to serve
as an effective vegetative barrier to check ·soil
erosion and conserve moisture under rainfed conditions.
