Description The present study was conducted in Mandya district of Karnataka
to analyze the economics of farm mechanization in rice cultivation with
sample size of 120 respondents. The results indicated that the small
farmers used more human labour (43.71 man days) than large farmers
(37.72 man days). The total bullock labour used by small farmer (5.17
BPD) was more than large farmers (1.03 BPD). The total machine labour
used by large farmers (5.62 hours) was more than small farmers (2.38
hours) in rice cultivation. The total cost of cultivation of rice in high
mechanized farmers (` 26732.73 per acre) was higher than the cost of
cultivation of low mechanized farmers (` 24068.36 per acre). The net
return obtained by high mechanized farmers (` 8,562 per acre) was
higher than the low mechanized farmers (` 6,359 per acre). The returns
per rupee invested were higher in high mechanized farmers (1.32)
compared to low mechanized farmers (1.26). The net gain due to
mechanized method of harvesting using combine harvester was ` 450.
The major problems encountered in farm mechanization in rice
cultivation were high investment on farm machineries, not suitable for
small sized holders, fodder loss due to use of combine harvester for
harvesting and custom hiring was another major problem due high
hiring charges of farm equipments or machineries.
