Description Computation of growth rates in area, production and yield of Finger
millet in major crop growing districts is attempted in the present investigation.
The time series data of area, production and yield of Finger millet from 1955-56
to 2004-05 was studied in decade wise as well as overall period. To estimate
the growth, different growth models were studied and the best model was fitted
based on R2 criteria.To calculate growth rates, compound growth rate was
applied. Further, an attempt has been made to study variability in production
through instability index and Hazell’s decomposition technique. Also, study has
been carried to identify structural change in area and yield of Finger millet.
It was found that quadratic regression fits best for area, production and
yield of Finger millet. Negative growth in area and positive growth in yield was
noticed. Increased instability was found in area, production and yield of Finger
millet in all five decades as well as overall period. The results of decomposition
technique show that change in average sown area and yield are major source of
change in average production. On the other hand, interaction between changes
in mean yield and area variance, interaction between changes in mean area
and yield variance and changes in area-yield covariance were major
components contributing to change in variance of production. Structural break
was noticed during post green revolution period. This information intern will be
useful to make policy decisions regarding procurement, distribution, buffer
stocking, import-export, price fixation and marketing of agricultural products.
