Description A field experiment was conducted during Rabi on
sandy loam soil (pH 7.7, available N 266.0 kg/ha and available
P205 31.5 kg/ha) at Student's Farm, College of Agriculture,
Rajendranagar, Hyderabad-500 030 to evaluate the effect of
different levels of nitrogen and phosphorus application on
dry matter and pod yield, content and uptake o·f macronutrients
and phosphorus utilization by French bean crop ( var. Con·tender)
Nitrogen was supplied through urea and phosphorus through
single superphosphate. The phosphorus in single superphosphate
was labelled with 32p radioisotope at a final specific
activity of 0.4 mCi/g P205. The plant samples were c~llected
at 30, 45 and 60 days after sowing, oven dried and were analysed
for different constituents adopting standard procedures.
The pod length, pod weight, number of pods per plant,
root dry weight, plant height, dry matter production and pod
yield showed significant response ~o N and P application. The maximum significant response was observed with application
of 20 kg N/ha + 50 kg P205/ha. Nodule numbers were considerably
reduced with the increased application of nitrogen
while phosphorus produced significant increase.
In general, there was marked increase in the content
of nitrogen and uptake of N P K with successive levels of nitrogen
and phosphorus application. But no change in phosphorus
and potassium content was observed with different levels of
nitro9en and phosphorus application.
The per cent phosphorus derived from fertilizer
(% Pdff), fertilizer P uptake and phosphorus utilization by
French bean increased with application of nitrogen at the rate
of 10 kg N/ha over no nitrogen but decreased when the level
of nitrogen was · increased from 10 to 20 kg N/ha. With increased
application of phosphorus from 25 to 75 kg P205/ha
there was linear increase in per cent Pdff, fertilizer Puptake
and per cent P utilization but there was gradual decrease
in soil P uptake. A-values of phosphorus increased with
increased application of phosphorus at 30 and 45 days but at
60 days it decreased. Increase in phosphorus utilization by
French bean was about 4Y2 times more from 30 to 45 days and
was lY2 times from 45 to 60 DAS at all the levels of N and P
application.
