Description |
The incidence of wilt disease on gerbera ranged from three to 10 per cent. Besides wilt, in some greenhouses, powdery mildew and leaf blight were also noticed on gerbera. On carnation, the wilt disease incidence varied from five per cent to 35 per cent. The cultures isolated from wilted gerbera and carnation plants were identified as Fusarium oxysporum Schelchtend.:Fr. f. sp. gerberae Gordon and Fusarium oxysporum Schelchtend. Fr. f. sp. dianthi (Prill. & Delacr.) Snyder & Hans. respectively based on morphological and cultural characters. Pathogenicity was proved for both the pathogens by artificial inoculation of gerbera suckers with F. oxysporum f. sp. gerberae and carnation rooted cuttings with F. oxysporum f. sp. dianthi. Both the pathogens produced three types of asexual spores, viz. microconidia, macroconidia and chlamydospores. Oat meal agar, Richards’s agar, Czapek’s Dox agar and potato dextrose agar supported maximum growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. gerberae. Potato dextrose agar, Richards’s agar, Czapek’s Dox agar and oat meal agar supported maximum growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. dianthi. Maximum dry mycelial weight was recorded on oat meal broth, Richards’s broth and Potato dextrose broth by both the pathogens. Under in vitro conditions, clove oil and garlic clove extract inhibited mycelial growth of both pathogens to a remarkable extent. Trichoderma koningii was found most effective in inhibiting mycelial growth of F. oxysporum f. sp. gerberae. Among the fungicides, carbendazim, carbendazim + mancozeb (Saaf), carbendazim + iprodione (Quintal) and mancozeb were found effective against both pathogens. Among the various treatments studied in vivo, carbendazim @ 0.1% and carbendazim + mancozeb @ 0.2% were very effective in inhibiting the wilt diseases of carnation and gerbera completely. |
