Description PG Thesis
To evaluate the different laparotomy approaches to accomplish
ovariohysterectomy in cats of age group 1-4 yrs. The animals were randomly divided into
two equal groups (n=6) groups of A and B. In group A ovariohysterectomy was
performed by ventral midline approach, where as in group B ovariohysterectomy was
performed by flank approach. In the present study duration of surgery, length of surgical
incision, cost of surgery, complications peri and post operatively and clinical and haemobiochemical
parameters were assessed. A negligible bleeding was noticed in group B
compared to group A due to surgical trauma to the muscles. The duration of surgery from
point of incision to closure of surgical wound was 12 ± 0.41 minutes in group A and
group B respectively length of surgical wound was 6.7 ± 0.48 cm in group A and group
B respectively, and cost of surgery was 160 ± 0.67 Rs. and 140 ± 0.45 Rs. in group A and
group B respectively. There were no any serious complications encountered during and
post-operatively in both groups. Animals spayed through lateral flank approach evinced
lesser pain compared to those animals which have spayed through ventral midline
approach. However, minor wound complications were noticed in group B compare to
group A. the surgical wound healed after 10 days. However, in uneventful cases surgical
wound healed in 7 days. There was no significant variation in physiological parameters
like rectal temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate and pulse rate in both the groups and
within the groups of different periods. There was no significant variation in haematobiochemical
parameters in both the groups. Hence, the results shows that flank approach
can be alternative to the traditional ventral midline approach for ovariohysterectomy in
cats.
