Description Gossypium hirsutum L. produces 90% of the world’s cotton. Modernization of
textile industry necessitates cultivars with high fiber strength. In the present
investigation intraspecific Recombinant inbred line (RIL) mapping population was
studied with a special emphasis for fiber quality at ARS Dharwad, during 2011-12
season.
High degree of genetic variability was observed for yield and yield
contributing traits studied and revealed highly significant differences among the
genotypes. RIL-13 (15.08q/ha) recorded high seed cotton yield, ten RILs recorded
boll weight of above 4.5 g and RIL-5 (5.04g) recorded highest boll weight. Fiber
strength above 25 g/tex was observed in RIL number-59 (27.2 g/tex), 23, 153 and 154
recorded 25.2 g/tex. Ten RILs recorded more than 28 mm of fiber length among
which RIL-105 (29.3 mm) and RIL-20 (29 mm) recorded superior fiber length.
Pubescence is an important trait contributing to jassid tolerance. One line (RIL-132)
was observed to possess highest rating of 9 while nine and forty RILs had 8 and 7
rating respectively.
Association analysis across genotypes revealed highly significant positive
correlation for yield with bolls per plant, boll weight, 2.5% span length and
micronaire value. Path analysis showed positive direct effect of boll weight, bolls per
plant, lint index, 2.5% span length and micronaire value on yield. Twenty nine cotton
SSR markers reported for fiber strength were used to screen the parents. The mapping
population was genotyped with 7 polymorphic SSRs among which CIR-246 marker
explained 3.2% of phenotypic variability for fiber strength. The high fiber quality
RILs identified in this study can be used in cotton breeding programme in hybrid and
varietal development with high fiber quality.
