Description An investigation on induced genetic variability for yield and oil quality traits in groundnut was
undertaken during kharif 2008 at Main Agricultural Research Station, University of Agricultural
Sciences, Dharwad. The experimental material comprised of two mutant groups derived from GPBD-4
and TPG-41 cultivars with EMS and gamma rays (200Gy and 300Gy) treatments. The mutants in M5
generation were grown in a replicated yield trial by adopting lattice design and observations were
recorded on fourteen quantitative characters and eight different fatty acids.
Significant induced genetic variation was observed in mutants studied as evidenced by their
higher mean, wider range and high PCV and GCV for most of the characters studied. High heritability
coupled with high GAM was observed for characters 100-kernel weight, pod yield, kernel yield, oil
yield, linoleic acid, oleic acid and O/L ratio.
Character association studies revealed positive and significant association of number of
primary branches per plant, shelling percentage, SMK, 100 kernel weight and pod yield with kernel
yield. Oleic acid and linoleic acid were negatively and significantly correlated, whereas O/L ratio had
significant positive correlation with oleic acid and significant negative correlation with linoleic acid.
The superior mutants identified for different economic traits and oil quality traits in GPBD-4
are G3-54, G3-285 and G3-15 for 100-kernel weight, G2-403, G3-248 and GE-11 for pod yield and oil
yield, GE-142A and G2-128 for oil content, G3-5428, GE-162, GE-167 for protein content, G3-42, G2-
76 and G3-83 for oleic acid, G2-76, G3-42 and G3-90 for linoleic acid and G3-90, G3-128 and G3-83,
for O/L ratio.
In TPG-41, TE-3412, TE-1898 and TE-1699 for 100-kernel weight, TE-1699 and T3-520 for
pod yield, TE-1000, TE-873 and T2-2199 for oil content, T2-4931, T2-5714 and T2-4918 for protein
content, T3-671, TE-1142 and TE-1300 for oleic acid, T2-5714 and T3-671 for linoleic acid and TE-
1142, T3-671 and T2-5714 for O/L ratio.
