Description Contract farming is providing an opportunity to farmers in
commercializing their farm to obatain assured proce and market for their
produce. In this regard a survey has been done in six crops viz., Tomato,
Marigold, Gherkin, Cotton, Watermelon and Pearl millet which are under
contract farming . Six districts of Karnataka viz., Chikkaballapur, Tumkur,
Davanagere, Haveri, Gadag and Bellary have been selected as major area under
contract farming is in these district. The farmers practicing contract farming
since 4 seasons were considered for the study. For each selected crop 40
respondents selected thus forms the sample size of 240. There was significant
social and economic impact observed in all the six crops. The most favourable
chang in the farmers attitude towards contract farming was in the order of
Water melon (52.50%), Tomato (40.00%), Pearl millet (40.00%), Gherkin
(35.00%) and Cotton (27.50%). Input supplied by firms namely, seeds,
fertilizers, protection chemicals are the major facilities provided by the firm. The
farmers opined that reputation of company, long term relationship with the
company and prices offered by the company for the produce were prime factors
influencing their preference for firm. Untimely lifting of produce, isolation,
labour scarcity, delay in settling payment and improper legal support were the
major constraints expressed by the respondents. Assured irrigation facilities,
small and medium category farmers are the pre-requisites for entering into
contract farming. The major constraints being faced by the contract sponsorers
were fixing of procurement price and labour scarcity. The suggestions for
success of the contract farming are timely payment and facilities for drip
irrigation by the sponsorers. However, contract sponsorers suggested for selling
of the entire produce to contract firm by the farmers and there should be
increased involvement of family member in cultivation of contracted crops.
