Description |
The present experiment was conducted at Research cum Instructional farm of IGKV, Raipur during Kharif 2010. The experimental material consists of thirty-five elite selections from crosses of rice variety Swarna with some other varieties to incorporate gall midge resistance and simultaneously to reduce the maturity duration, with same grain type as Swarna. In order to identify elite plant type with desired characters different parameters of variability were estimated for observed characters i.e. mean, range, phenotypic and genotypic variance, phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variances, heritability, genetic advance and genetic advance as percentage of mean. Correlation among all the observed characters was also estimate. To know the direct and indirect effects of all the observed characters on grain yield as dependent characters grain yield path coefficient was analyzed. Multiple regression analysis was carried out to find out the best character combinations with grain yield, as dependent variables. Presence of significant variability for all the observed characters as indicated by analysis of variance revealed that direct selection will be useful to select elite line among the cross. Selection based on plant height, days to maturity, number of tillers per plant, panicle length, test weight of milled rice and head rice recovery percentage will be more reliable for the improvement of rice due to major contribution of additive gene effect as indicated by high heritability and genetic advance as percentage of mean. High phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation with high genetic advance as percentage of mean for plant height, number of tiller per plant, days to maturity and panicle length indicated that mass selection can be practiced to improve the rice genotype. Correlation analysis at genotype, phenotypic and environmental levels indicated that grain yield could be increased significantly with the improvement of plant height, milling percentage, kernel breadth, head rice recovery percentage and test weight. Path analysis revealed that grain yield per hectare can be increased directly by selection based on plant height, panicle length, number of tiller per plant, days to maturity and test weight. Multiple regression equation indicate the above analysis crosses 5, 19 and 27 showed desirable types fitted with objectives. These genotypes were earlier screened against gall midge resistance; therefore it is presumed that the progeny of these selections also carry the same character. The maturity of Swarna is nearly 140 days. The selected lines 5, 19 and 27 having the maturity duration between 126-130 days, which fulfill the second objective of study. Hence the lines selected from crosses 5, 19 and 27 are having improvement over Swarna. |
