Description The understanding of changes in cropping pattern over the years is necessary
to get better returns, decision on optimal locations and capacities of new agro-based
plants and balancing of the production. The study aimed at analyzing the changes in
cropping pattern in Karnataka. The necessary secondary data were collected for a
period of 30 years from 1979-80 to 2008-09. Tabular analysis, Growth rate,
Concordance analysis and Multiple linear regression analysis were employed to
analyze various aspects of the changes in cropping pattern.
The cereals and minor millets covered larger proportion of the gross cropped
area followed by oilseeds. Pulses stood third in terms of area share out of gross
cropped area followed by commercial crops. Plantation, condiments and spices, fruits
and vegetables also occupied a considerable share in gross cropped area over the
periods. Barring cereals and minor millets and commercial crops most of the crop
categories registered a positive annual growth in area during the study period.
Belgaum, Bellary, Bijapur, Chitradurga, Dharwad, Gulbarga, Mysore, Raichur,
Shimoga and Tumkur were the major oilseeds and pulses growing districts. Area
under soybean, maize, bengal gram, paddy, sugarcane, onion and green gram has
increased over the year while that of jowar, horse gram, linseed, safflower, sweet
potato and coriander has considerably declined in state. Kharif crops occupied major
area followed by rabi crops. The summer crops occupied considerable area in all the
districts. Net cropped area showed decreasing trend while cropping intensity has
increased in the state and in all the districts. The concordance coefficients revealed
that the area share of crops in the study period were not in agreement with each other.
Multiple regression analysis revealed that net and gross irrigated area, area
under high yielding varieties, annual rainfall and land holdings were the factors
responsible for the changes in cropping pattern.
