Description Six F2 populations viz., ICGV12370 × NRCG12473, ICGV12370 ×
NRCG12274, GKVK-8B × GPBD-4, GKVK-5 × GPBD-4, GKVK-8B ×
Chinthamani-2 and GKVK-5 × Chinthamani-2 along with selected three
F3 families viz., ICGV12370 × NRCG12274, GKVK-8B × Chinthamani-2
and GKVK-5 × Chinthamani-2 were assessed for genetic variability
during kharif 2012 and summer 2013. Magnitude of GCV and PCV
values was high for pods plant-1, pod yield plant-1, kernel yield plant-1,
sound mature kernels (SMK) and branches plant-1 in all crosses in both
generations indicated large extent of genetic variability. All F2 populations
showed high heritability with GAM for SMK and shelling percentage.
ICGV 12370 × NRCG 12473 manifested for kernel yield plant-1 and cross
GKVK-5 × Chinthamani-2 for pods plant-1 indicating involvement of
additive gene action. But in F3 generation moderate heritability with high
GAM was observed for plant height, yield related traits and Specific Leaf
Area (SLA) in crosses GKVK-8B × Chinthamani-2 and GKVK-5 ×
Chinthamani-2. In F2 generation pod yield plant-1 was associated
positively with kernel yield plant-1, pods plant-1 and SMK. SPAD
Chlorophyll meter reading (SCMR) and SLA had significantly negative
correlation with each other in all crosses except GKVK- 5 × GPBD- 4.
Kernel yield plant-1 manifested maximum direct effect on Pod yield plant-1
in all crosses and thus kernel yield is the important trait for enhancing
pod yield in groundnut. F3 family performance of cross GKVK-8B ×
Chinthamani-2 for pod yield was superior over other crosses and check
TMV-2.
