Description |
Energy has been defined as the power to perform work. The human body requires energy for the utilisation of food, performance of physical activities and for maintenance of body temperature. In order to be in energy balance which is assumed to be a steady state, the energy input must equal energy output. Energy intake and energy expenditure of 25-35 years, non pregnant and non lactating women engaged in Sorghum farming, Dairy farming and Rice farming in Palem village, Mahboobnagar District, A.P., was determined for a period of three days to assess their energy balance. The daily activities were recorded and energy expenditure was determined by factorial method. The food energy value of the diets of each subject was also determined. The three day activity assessments showed that the subjects of all the three groups were active, spending greater proportion of their time on moderate and slightly moderate activities and a considerable amount of time on occupational activities involving higher energy cost. Women engaged in Sorghum farming, Dairy farming and Rice farming were in negative energy balance of -820 Kcal/day, -927 Kcal/day and -1057 Kcal/day, respectively. Protein in the diet represented 8.6%, 8.5% and 8.8% of the total calories of Sorghum farming, Dairy farming and Rice farming women respectively. The energy intake was much lower than that recommended by ICMR (1981). The mean total energy intake of Sorghum farming and Rice farming women were not significantly different from each other but they were significantly (P |
