Description |
Agriculture is the backbone of India. More than 60- 65 per cent of people depend directly or indirectly upon agriculture. The role of agriculture in the economic development of the India cannot be under estimated, as the largest segment of population is wedded to agriculture and it accounts for nearly half of the national income. Since independence, the country has observed revolutionary changes in agriculture and allied fields, particularly in cereals like rice and wheat. Rice contains easily digestible high quality starch, Protein and Vitamin B group and also it acts as a valuable source for many products. Rice is dominant staple food in India Many technologies are developed to boost rice production viz., high yielding dwarf varieties, hybrids, more resistant to lodging, short life duration, system of rice intensification and SIRA technique. The door to door marketing of private companies of hybrid rice seed in the packing of 1 or 2 kg is also available for the farmer which is very useful to small land holders. Such packing is not available from the public sectors. The hybrid seeds are costly so, the farmers have to cultivate it with good practices. The cooking quality of hybrid rice is better than many other high yielding varieties. The nursery area required for hybrid rice cultivation is lower so that the land can be utilized more efficiently. There are many more factors which are responsible to convince tribal farmers to grow and cultivate hybrid rice in eastern belt of South Gujarat. Hence, it is high time to convince study the cultivation status of hybrid rice in tribal areas. Keeping this view in mind the present study was planned with following objectives. OBJECTIVES: 1. To study the personal characteristics of hybrid rice growers. 2. To study the present status of cropping pattern of hybrid rice. 3. To identify the motivating element of hybrid rice growers. 4. To study the attitude of rice growers towards cultivation of hybrid rice. 5. To find out the relation between the personal characteristics and attitude of rice growers towards cultivation of hybrid rice. 6. To study the constraints faced by the hybrid rice growers. 7. To seek the suggestions to overcome such constraints. METHODOLOGY: The present study was conducted in the South Gujarat region. This region has 7 districts and out of them five districts having higher hybrid rice cultivation has been selected. Navsari, Valsad, Narmada, Tapi and Dang districts belonged to South Gujarat. The Navsari and Valsad districts came in to existence in 1960 with the formation of Gujarat whereas; Narmada and dang districts were separated from the Bharuch and Valsad district in 1997 respectively. Considering the typological differentiation in population of Surat district, the Government of Gujarat has apart five talukas which located in eastern part of Surat were converted in to Tapi district from 2007. From each district 2 talukas and from each talukas one village of hybrid rice grower was selected. 10 respondents from each village hybrid rice grower have been randomly selected for the study. Thus, total 10 numbers of taluka 10 village and total numbers of respondents were 100.Ex-post- facto research design was used for the study. Keeping in view, the objectives of the study, the interview schedule was prepared and respondents were interviewed at their home and field. Ten independent variables were measured through respective scales and structured schedules. Age was measured by collecting their chronological age. The education, type of family, occupation, annual income, land holding, source of information and social participation were measured with the scale developed by Pandya (2011). Scientific orientation, economic motivation, risk orientation was measured with the scale developed by Supe (1969) and overall modernity was measured with the scale developed Inkeles (1996). Two dependent variables viz; motivating element, attitude of rice grower toward cultivation of hybrid rice was measured with help of structured schedule for the present study. The collected data were analyzed by using percentage, mean and standard deviation. A simple percentage technique was also applied to materialize the constraints and suggestions. FINDINGS 1. The findings of this study reported that, majority of the respondents belongs to middle age group, possessed primary to secondary level of education, lived in medium type of family, low to medium level of annual income, had medium level of farming experience, medium level of land holding, medium, lower level of social participation, medium level of scientific orientation, risk orientation, economic motivation, Considering these characteristics of respondents, all possible efforts should be made to encourage and accelerating motivated and attitude toward cultivation of hybrid rice. 2. The hybrid rice cultivation in tribal area different cropping pattern like Intercropping rice: Pigeon pea/ Sorghum/ black gram / ground nut / cowpea / maize, Mixed cropping rice + pigeon pea / sorghum / maize / black gram /cowpea , Strip cropping rice + pigeon pea / black gram / cowpea / ground nut, Relay cropping Kharif rice-Rabi pigeon pea / Rabi Indian bean / Rabi sesame / Rabi gram are existed. 3. The hybrid rice grower had medium level of motivation in hybrid rice cultivation. 4. The rice grower have favorable attitude towards hybrid rice cultivation in tribal area. 5. The age was negatively and non-significantly correlated with attitude towards hybrid rice, where occupation, annual income, land holding, and family size were positively but non-significantly correlated with attitude towards hybrid rice. However, education, social participation, economic motivation, risk orientation and scientific orientation were highly significantly correlated with the attitude of beneficiaries towards hybrid rice. 6. The lack of technical guideline in hybrid rice cultivation was found as a main constraint followed by lack of improved variety and high cost of seed. 7. The Improved variety should be provided given as main suggestion followed by subsidy should be increase and proper technical guidance should be given to the farmers. |
