Description A comparative study of serum progesterone (P4) pro le was carried out on 32 cyclical
crossbred cows during natural and induced estrus in fertile and non-fertile cycles. The cows were divided into 4 groups viz. group 1 (articially inseminated twice at 24 hours interval at observed estrum-control), group 2 (administered with PGF2α on day 10 of estrous cycle), group 3 (PGF2α on day 10 of estrous cycle and GnRH at the time of  rst AI) and group 4 (PGF2α on day 10 of estrous cycle and hCG at the time of rst AI). From all the cows, the blood samples were collected on day 10 or at PGF2α injection, at the time of estrum and on day 5, 16, 22 and 30 postinsemination and the serum P4 was estimated by solid phase radioimmunoassay technique. In general, there was an increase in the level of serum P4 in all the fertile and non-fertile cows. Serum P4 concentration on the day of estrous (day 0) was low in fertile (0.19±0.04 ng/ml) than
non-fertile (0.31±0.04 ng/ml) cows. There was a marginal increase in P4 level in both fertile and non-fertile cows in induced estrous when compared to natural estrous. The GnRH or hCG administration on the day of estrous had no effect on P4 concentration over the rst 16 days of the cycle but later in non-fertile group it declined.
