Description The purpose of the study was to compare the aesthetic and serviceability
characteristics of parchmentized linen and cotton. The study was
undertaken as following . .
Seven meters each of unfinished cotton and linen were procured and
two meters from each was kept aside as control and the remaining (Jive
metres were parchmentized. Twelve standard sized midies were stitched for
the age groups of 14-16 years. Then 8 midies were given to wear for eight
hours a day to subjects who had similar activity. After each wear, the
midies were laundered using standard laundering procedure. Waar and
laundering cycle continued upto 10 and 20 levels of launderings. Aesthetic
and serviceability characteristics were assessed for unlaundered midies
and for midies laundered at different levels of laundering after parchmentization
for both linen and cotton . The results of subjective evaluation
showed that parchmentized linen had better drape, stiffness, lustre, transparency,
hand and wrinkling property than unparchmentized linen and also
than parchmentized cotton and unparchmentized cotton. Majority of the
consumers preferred parchmentized linen as the first order of preference
followed by unparchmentized linen, unparchmentized cotton and parchmentized
cotton. When ascertained about suitability of the materials for
various garments, it was found that both parchmentized linen and cotton
and unparchmentized linen and cotton were all suitable as dress materials
specially for ' wai~t coat~ midie, skirt, jacket and school uniform.
The findings of laboratory tests revealed that parchmentized linen
was superior in its performance to repeated launderings than unparchmentized
linen and also than unparchmentized cotton and parchmentized cotton in
unlaundered condition as well as at different levels of launderings. Therefore
it can be expected to serve better even in use.
The cost difference between parchmentized linen and parchmentized
cotton was calculated. Since the parchmentization was similar for both
cotton and linen, there was difference only in the raw material cost of
cotton and linen. Parchmentized linen had taken up brighter shade of
colour than parchmentized cotton and also than unparchmentized linen and
cotton. Unparchmentized linen and cotton and also parchmentized linen and
cotton when block printed showed similar affinity for dyes.
