A field experiment was conducted in the E-6 Block of Norman E. Borlaug Crop Research Centre of the Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, District Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand during 2008-10. The experiment consisting of five subsoiling practices (no subsoiling, subsoiling at 1.0 m distance, subsoiling at 1.5 m distance, cross subsoiling at 1.0 m distance and cross subsoiling at 1.5 m distance) and three preparatory tillage practices (two harrowing, four harrowing and once rotavator) was laid out in Strip Plot Design with three replications. The sugarcane cultivar used in the study was CoS 97264. Soil of the experimental plot (0-15 cm depth) was silty clay loam having pH 7.4, organic carbon 1.1%, available nitrogen 196.2 kg ha-1, phosphorus 21.4 kg ha- and potassium 202.2 kg ha-1. The initial soil bulk density was 1.44 and 1.61 Mg m-3 in 0-30 and 30-60 cm depths, respectively. Subsoiling operations significantly affected the yield and yield attributing characters of plant and ratoon crops. Cross subsoiling at 1.0 m resulted in significantly higher cane yield (75.8 and 74.9 t ha-1), and CCS yield (8.9 and 9.6 t ha-1) in plant and ratoon crops, respectively than other subsoiling treatments and no subsoiling. The yield attributes viz. individual cane weight and number of millable cane and juice quality were also favours affected by subsoiling. Subsoiling enhanced the net return and benefit: cost ratio from plant-ratoon system, being the maximum with cross subsoiling at 1.0 m distance (Rs.191688/ha and 2.42) compared to no subsoiling (Rs.123466/ha and 1.69). The soil available NPK also improved and reduction in bulk density due to subsoiling. Preparatory tillage practices did not affect cane yield, yield attributes and juice quality. However, the crop emergence and root development were significantly better under four harrowing. |
