Description Gamma () probability distribution was fitted for 30 years (1980-
2010) of daily Southwest Monsoon rainfall data of Southern dry zone
of Karnataka. The parameters are calculated and goodness of fit of
distribution was confirmed by chi-square test. The probability of
occurrence of ≤50, 50-150, 150-250 and ≥250 mm of rainfall were
obtained for the South-west Monsoon season. A non-parametric
approach based on the concept of two-way contingency tables was
applied to study the associations of combined effect of rainfall pattern
on crop yield by using 30 years crop yield and rainfall data of
Southern dry zone of Karnataka. It identifies both rainfall patterns
and levels of crop yields that occur during the crop season. Further an
attempt is made to measure their associations. Backward elimination
was applied to study the effect of rainfall distribution on crop
production over the periods. The response is yield and the predictors
are rainfall, temperature (maximum & minimum), RH (morning &
evening) and sunshine hrs. The least significant variable i.e., the one
with the largest ‘P’ value is removed and the model is refitted. Each
subsequent step removes the least significant variable in the model
until all remaining variables have individual ‘P’ values smaller than
some value, such as 0.05 or 0.01. Thus rainfall was found to have a
remarkable influence on crop yield for the period under study in
Southern dry zone of Karnataka.
