Description |
A storage experiment was conducted to understand the effect of Production environments on seed storability and quality of rice genotypes (Oryza sativa L.) at Department of Seed Science and Technology, College of Agriculture, ANGRAU, Hyderabad and Directorate of Rice Research, Hyderabad for 9 months during 2012-13. The experiment was carried out with two different production environments viz., seeds grown from humid environment (Q1) and arid environment (Q2), two seed ages viz., one year old seed (P1) and freshly harvested seed (P2) and three seed treatments, viz., carbendazim @ 2.0 g/ kg (T1), mancozeb @ 2.5 g/ kg (T2) and untreated control (T3). The experiment was conducted in Completely Randomized Block Design with Factorial concept (FCRD) and was replicated thrice. The observations were recorded on seed quality parameters viz., seed moisture content, germination (%), speed of germination, co-efficient of velocity of germination, root and shoot length (cm), seedling length (cm), seedling vigour index I and II, seedling dry and fresh weight (mg). The observations also recorded on biochemical parameters viz., EC of seed leachate (dSm-1), α-amylase activity (diameter in mm) and dehydrogenase activity (OD value) and seed health parameter viz., seed infection (%). The observations were recorded tri-monthly during 9 months of storage period. The results of seed quality parameters namely seed germination parameters, seedling vigour parameters, biochemical and seed health parameters were exhibited significantly decreasing trend throughout the storage period irrespective of production environment, seed age and seed treatments and their interaction effect. Whereas moisture content of the seed was found to vary in concomitant with fluctuation of ambient atmosphere (shown increasing trend in all varieties). Production environment of the seed has shown significant influence on almost all the parameters. At the end of storage, seed produced at arid environment (Q2) recorded significantly higher seed germination parameters, seedling vigour parameters and biochemical parameters viz., alpha- amylase activity and dehydrogenase activity except EC of seed leachate, moisture content and seed infection (%) in all the three varieties compared to humid environment (Q1). Seed of all varieties procured from arid environment maintained germination percent above minimum seed certification standard at the end of storage. Among the two seed ages, freshly harvested seed (P2) showed better performance by recording high values for all the quality parameters except for EC of seed leachate, moisture content and seed infection (%) compared to one year old seed (P1). Among the seed treatments, seeds treated with carbendazim (T1) recorded significantly higher values for all the quality parameters except EC of seed leachate, moisture content and seed infection (%) at the end of the storage period, followed by mancozeb (T2) over control (T3) in all three varieties. Seeds treated with carbendazim recorded satisfactory germination (%) at the end of storage period for all varieties except Annada. Among the interaction of Q x P combinations, the seed from arid environment and freshly harvested seed (Q2P2) recorded higher quality, biochemical parameters and lower seed infection (%) compared to seeds produced at humid environment and one year old (Q1P1). The interaction between production environment and seed treatments (Q x T), the combination of seed produced at arid environment treated with carbendazim (Q2T1) recorded higher quality, biochemical parameters and lower seed infection followed by the seed from same production environment treated with mancozeb (Q2T2) and seed from humid environment treated with carbendazim (Q1T1) as compared to control and other combinations. Among the combinations of seed age and seed treatments (P x T), the freshly harvested seeds treated with carbendazim (P2T1) recorded higher seed quality parameters compared to the untreated seeds of one year old (P1T3). From the present investigation it can be concluded that the freshly harvested seed, which is produced at arid environment and treated with carbendazim (Q2P2T1) showed high quality standards and improved storability followed by the seed from same production environment and freshly harvested, treated with mancozeb (Q2P2T2) as compared to other combinations in all the three rice genotypes |
