Description Peri-urban agriculture refers to production units close to town, which operate
intensive semi- or fully commercial farms to grow vegetables and other crops, raise
livestock, and produce milk and eggs. Urban and peri-urban agriculture, although not a
panacea for food insecurity, has the potential to provide millions with some secure
access to food. In and around the National capital region of Delhi, farmers are taking up
cultivation of vegetables due to their high demand. The study was conducted to analyse
the production dynamics and factors affecting peri-urban agriculture in Hapur district of
Uttar Pradesh and Faridabad district of Haryana, India. Hapur block was selected from
Hapur district and Faridabad block from Faridabad district. Two villages each from
these blocks were selected and thus a total of 120 respondents from villages constituted
the sample size.
The data collected from the respondent revealed that average production
dynamics index of the farmers in the study area was 65.56. It was found out that
83.33per cent of farmers were in the dynamic category followed by 12.5 per cent in
highly dynamic and 4.16 per cent in least dynamic category of production dynamics.
Majority of famers were middle age group, having high school level of education
having medium family sizes were in the dynamic range of production dynamic index.
65.66 per cent farmers having agriculture as their prime occupation were in the dynamic
category. Age showed negative correlation with production dynamics index while
education, experience annual income from vegetable, extension contact and social
participation was showing positive and significant correlation with production dynamics
index.
The result of the study shows that 51.2 per cent of the farmers had vegetable as
their most preferred enterprise and 49.6 per cent of the farmers had organic manure as
their most preferred choice in nutrient management. IARI emerged the most sought
after institution providing support to the farmers in the selected areas. Unavailability of
inputs like fertilizers during peak period, unavailability of labour during harvesting with
high cost of fertilizers and plant protection chemicals were the prime problems indicated
by the vegetable growing farmers.
