Description The present study was undertaken in 150 broiler chicks to access the effects of Ashwagandha on CPF
toxicity. The chicks (10 days of age) were divided randomly into 3 groups viz. group A, B and C
containing 50 chicks each. All the birds of group A were provided with normal feed and water, that of
group B with Ashwagandha @ 0.2 per cent of feed and that of group C with Ashwagandha @0.5 per cent
of feed, throughout the experiment. At the age of 17 days these three groups were further subdivided into
group A1, A2, group B1, B2 and group C1, C2, respectively. Out of these subgroups group A2, B2 and C2
were treated with 1/5 th of MTD of CPF orally through drops, for next 28 days. Clinical signs were
weakness, depression, salivation, mucoid and bloody diarrhoea. CPF intoxicated group A2 showed
significantly lower mean body weight as compared to groupA1 which was found increased in groups B2
and C2. There was significant increase in mean serum AST, ALT, AKP, CPK, activities in CPF intoxicated
groups as compared to group A1. However, their activity was decreased in groups B2 and C2. Mean ChE
activity in whole blood, plasma and RBC was found to be significantly lower in all the CPF treated groups
as compared to control which was also found to be inhibited in groups B2 and C2. There was a decrease in
mean SOD and CAT values in group A2 whereas these increased in groups B2 and C2. Gross pathological
studies revealed anaemic carcass, mildly congested lungs, heart, congestion in liver, kidneys, brain, bursa
of Fabricius; splenomegaly. The histopathological lesions observed were congestion, focal areas of
necrosis and bile duct hyperplasia in liver, thickening of interlobular septa in lungs, serofibrinous exudate
in the pericardium, congestion in serosa, infiltration of mononuclear cells in submucosa of intestine,
coagulative necrosis in kidneys, depletion of lymphocytes in spleen, necrosis of pancreatic acinar cells and
degenerative changes in neurons. The HMI was lowered on CPF intoxication which nonsignificantly
increased groups B2 and C2. CPF intoxication caused significantly lower values of LPA. Ashwagandha
enhanced the CMI which was significant in chicks of group C2. Based on these studies it is concluded that
Ashwagandha supplementation had ameliorating effect on chlorpyrifos toxicity in broiler chicken which
was more at 0.5 percent supplementation.
