Livestock contributes 3.4 per cent of the total GDP which is about one-fourth of the GDP from agriculture sector. Dairy farmers are recognized as the major pillar of development in Uttar Pradesh. The study was conducted on 125 respondents of five villages of Harhua block of Varanasi district. A pre-tested interview scheduled was administered to selected respondents. Relevant data on various social, economic and psychological profile variables were collected. Also the level of knowledge and adoption of the recommended practices of respondents in dairy farming were reported. Technological gap in adoption of the recommended practices by respondents were also reported. Keeping the objectives in view data were further analyzed and tabulated by applying appropriate statistical tools and technique. Analytical research design was used for the purpose. Majority of the respondents were middle aged, OBC category, having medium literacy and medium sized nuclear family with dairy and agriculture as main occupation. Mostly they were at medium level in herd size, milk production, consumption and sale. Regarding communication behavior of farmer’s members had medium to high access to livestock extension service, extension agent and mass media exposure. The knowledge and adoption about recommended practices was reported around 50 per cent. The overall technological gap in adoption of recommended practices was calculated approximately 60 per cent among the dairy farmers of Varanasi district. In all it can be concluded from the study that still dairy farmers are deficient in knowledge and adoption regarding improved dairy farming practices and still there is a wide technological gap in all the areas like breeding, feeding, management and health care which require attention of the government and social organizations to attain self sufficiency in dairy. |
