Description The present experiment was conducted at Research cum Instructional Farm of the Department of Horticulture, IGKV, Raipur (C.G.) during winter season of 2009-10 to evaluate the effect of weed management practices on growth and yield of brinjal, weed dynamics, nutrient removal by weeds and also the economics of its cultivation. The field experiment was replicated three times in Randomized Block Design (RBD) using 11 treatments viz., unweeded check, hand weeding twice at 30 and 60 DAT, mulch of waste of previous crop at 0 up to 60 DAT, alachlor 50% EC @ 2.0 kg ha-1 pre-transplanting, alachlor 50% EC @ 2.0 kg ha-1 pre-transplanting + one hand weeding at 45 DAT, pendimethalin 30% EC @ 1.0 kg ha-1 pre-transplanting, pendimethalin 30% EC @ 1.0 kg ha-1 pre-transplanting + one hand weeding at 45 DAT, glyphosate 41% SL @ 1.5 kg ha-1 post-transplanting at 30 and 60 DAT, glyphosate 41% SL @1.5 kg ha-1 post-transplanting at 30 and 60 DAT + one hand weeding at 15 DAT, pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg ha-1 pre-transplanting + one hand weeding at 40 DAT and pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg ha-1 pre-transplanting + one hand weeding at 40 DAT + pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg ha-1 at 45 DAT.
Significantly higher number of total branches, leaf area, leaf area index, number of fruit, weight of fruit, length of fruit, girth of fruit and fruit yield were obtained under pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg ha-1 pre-transplanting + one hand weeding at 40 DAT + pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg ha-1 at 45 DAT. Application of glyphosate @1.5 kg ha-1 post-transplanting at 30 and 60 DAT + one hand weeding at 15 DAT was found to be best treatment for parameters recorded at 35 DAT.
In experimental field, Parthenium hysterophorus dominated the field followed by Melilotus alba, Sonchus arvensis, Cynodon dactylon, Alternenthera triandra, Chenopodium album, Physalis minima and Cyperus iria. The weed population and dry matter of weeds and unweeded control was recorded minimum under pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg ha-1
pre-transplanting + one hand weeding at 40 DAT + pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg ha-1 at 45 DAT. Weed control efficiency was found maximum (89.41%) under pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg ha-1 pre-transplanting + one hand weeding at 40 DAT + pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg ha-1 at 45 DAT. At 30 DAT, however, application of glyphosate 41% SL @1.5 kg ha-1 post-transplanting at 30 and 60 DAT + one hand weeding at 15 DAT was found to be superior for the weed parameters. Minimum nitrogen removal (1.78 kg ha-1) was also registered with pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg ha-1 pre-transplanting + one hand weeding at 40 DAT + pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg ha-1 at 45 DAT while it was maximum under unweeded check (14.02 kg ha-1).
With regards to economics, the maximum gross return (Rs 201440), net return (Rs 157386.08) as well as benefit: cost ratio (3.57) were obtained under pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg ha-1 pre-transplanting + one hand weeding at 40 DAT + pendimethalin (extra) 37.8% CS @ 0.64 kg/ ha-1 at 45 DAT .
