Description |
A study was conducted to determine the prevalence of mastitis caused by yeast in Salem area in Tamil Nadu State of India. A total 261 clinical mastitic milk samples from Jersey cross bred cows and Holstein Friesian cows brought to ten veterinary dispensaries for treatment were collected over a period of 6 months and examined. Milk samples were plated on to Sabouraud dextrose agar. Twenty seven (10.34%) samples were positive for the genus yeasts and in that Candida sp. (44.44%) were predominant followed by Rhodotorulo sp.(25.93%), Torulopsis sp. (14.82%), Rhizopus sp(11.11%) and Geotrichum candidum (3.70%). Among the candida, the species C. albicans accounted for more than one third of the strains isolated. As the incidencece has been reported to occur mostly after antibiotic treatment, often without microbiological examination of milk from affected mammary gland, attention should be given to advocate judicious usage of specific antibiotics after culturing the milk before embarking in to any treatment protocol so as to reduce the possible significant economic losses that could be incurred by mastitis.
