Description Training is the most important input for human resource
development, which upgrades the professional capability of an
extension personnal. It is the integral part of T & V system of
agricultural extension, in which there are various special periodic
training programmes in addition to the regular inbuilt
training of the staff through fortnightly and monthly workshops.
Systematic assessment of training needs of extension personnel is
very important to make the training programmes successful and to
prevent the waste of human and material investment. Agricultural
Extension Officers are in a crucial position in the T & V system
and they are the main link between researchers and farmers. To
increase their efficiency, training is a must which should be
invariably preceeded by assessment of their actual training
needs.
The present study has been designed to assess the training
needs of the AEOs working under the T & V system in Orissa
following the ex-post-facto research design. This study was
conducted in three revenue districts) randomly selecting one from
each revenue division. The sample comprised of 125 respondents
which include 50 AEOs, 25 SMSs and 50 VAWs. The data was collected
by personal interview schedule and analysed by using appropriate
statistical methods.
Some of the important findings of the study are as
follows.
1. Majority of the respondents belonging to middle age
group, and graduates in agriculture, had experience of 5
to 20 years, undergone training in more than one subject
for mor~ than one week period, had medium rural orientation,
medium exposure to massmedia hnd technical/professional
literature, and had medium interpersonal contact.
Most of them had membership in one organisation.
2. Majority of the AEOs (68% and 72%) belonged to medium
category with respect of their knowledge and skill training
needs respectively.
3. Out of various need items in both knowledge and skill
training needs categories, all the three levels of respondents
preferred that AEOs require more training in
plant Protection, Preparation of Production Plan,
audiovisual aids, communication methods and techniques
and administrative procedures involving both knowledge
and skill aspects.
4. Significant associations were found among the AEOs, SMSs
and VAWs in assessment of training needs of AEOs.
5. Correlation analysis indicated that only variable massmedia
exposure was found to be significantly related
with both knowledge and skill training needs.
6. Common
dents
suggestions given by the three levels of responto
satisfy the training needs of AEOs were as
follows.
More practical oriented trainings should be imparted to
the AEOs in field situation. Special training should be
imparted on plant protection, communication techniques,
and administration and audio-visual aids should be used
in training programmes.
7. Based on the identified needs and suggestions of the
respondents a strategy was framed which highlights that,
infrastructural facilities should be developed for training,
orientation and re-orientation training for the
AEOs at regular interval training for the trainers to
improve their efficiency and study tours for the AE~ .
In view of the above findings, the administrators and
planners of State Department of Agriculture are to be very keen
enough to train not only to the AEOs, but also all the extension
functionaries involved in T & V system, assessing their actual
training needs, so that they will be able to discharge their
duties effectively.
