Description Taxonomic studies on two subfamilies of Miridae (Insecta: Hemiptera: Miridae)
of south India were made. A total of 2100 specimens collected from Andhra Pradesh,
Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu revealed the presence of 14 genera and 18 species of
Bryocorinae and 14 genera and 29 species of Phylinae. These taxa are described and
illustrated including both male and female genitalia.
Subfamily Bryocorinae was represented by 3 tribes Bryocorini (Bryocoris),
Dicyphini (Campyloneuropsis, Nesidiocoris, Singhalesia, Eupachypeltis, Felisacus,
Helopeltis, Pachypeltis, Mircarvalhoia and Platyngomiriodes) and Eccritotarsini
(Dioclerus, Ernestinus, Prodromus and Thaumastomiris).
Some species of bryocorine genera Nesidiocoris, Helopeltis, Pachypeltis,
Mircarvalhoia and Prodromus are economically important as pests of crop plants.
Subfamily Phylinae was represented by 5 tribes Auricillocorini, (Wygomiris,
Zaratus), Hallodapini (Acrorrhinium, Hallodapus and Sohenus), Leucophorpterini
(Sejanus), Pilophorini (Hypseloecus, Pilophorus, Pherolepis, and Sthenaridea) and
Phylini (Campylomma, Moissonia, Lasiolabops and Tytthus). Species of the Phylinae
genera Campylomma and Moisssonia were phytophagous; Tytthus, Sohenus and
Pilophorus were predators, and Acrorrhinium and Sohenus were associated with and
resembled ants.
The genera Bryocoris, Campyloneuropsis, Singhalesia, Eupachypeltis and
Platyngomiriodes (Bryocorinae), Wygomiris, Hypseloecus and Pherolepis (Phylinae) are
reported for the first time from India. Fourteen new species, one each in genera
Bryocoris, Eupachypeltis, Felisacus, Platyngomiriodes, Dioclerus, Thaumastomiris,
Wygomiris, Hypseloecus, Pilophorus and Pherolepis and two each in genera
Acrorrhinium and Hallodapus have been described.
The distribution maps to species of south Indian genera of the subfamilies
Bryocorinae and Phylinae are also provided.
