Description |
The investigations were carried out on gladiolus in order to evaluate vegetative and floral traits, to study floral biology, to assess viability of fresh or cryopreserved pollen, and to assess seed set. Among 21 genotypes, 'H.S. 88-10-22', 'Shobha' and 'H. S. 84-7-11' were early flowering. The number of florets per spike was high in 'Arka Kesar', 'Shobha' and 'Pink Friendship'. Maximum number of marketable spikes per corm was in 'Psittacinus hybrid' which was on par with 'H.S. 87-22-1' and 'H. S. 88-4-8'. Maximum vase life was in ‘H.S. 87-22-1’. For corm production ‘Psittacinus hybrid’, 'H.S. 84-4-9' and 'Gladiolus callianthus ' were promising whereas 'H.S. 84-4-9', 'Shobha' and 'Sapna' were promising for cormel production. The duration of floret loosening to opening of the first floret was short in 'Shobha' and 'H.S. 84-7-11'. The duration of anther dehiscence was long in 'Psittacinus hybrid' and H.S. 82-11-27'. Duration of stigma receptivity was long in 'H.S. 87-22-1' (4 days 1 hour and 37 minutes) and in 'Tilak' (4 days 1 hour). Sucrose at 15 % with pollen germination medium imparted the highest percentage of pollen germination (48.58 %) in ‘Kum Kum'. Percentage of fresh pollen germination was high in 'H.S. 88-10-22','G. callianthus' , 'Sapna' and 'H.S. 86-32-11'. Among different cross combinations, the high number of well-developed seeds per capsule were in 'H.S. 88-10-22 x H.S. 84-7-11' (49.00 per capsule). The interaction effect of fresh pollen, cross combination (H.S. 88-10-22 x Shobha) and the first capsule produced the highest number of well-developed seeds (47.86 per capsule). The interaction effect of 100 ppm GA treatment in 'H.S. 88-10-22 x G. callianthus' and the first capsule produced the bigger capsule size (418.00 mm2) than the remaining ones. |
