Description The 12th plan through its ‘Bharat Nirman’ aimed at empowering rural women through
Self Help Groups (SHG). SHG is known to be one of the most effective and potent means of
empowering women. It is observed that the SHG members in Balasore are able to take
decisions, often appropriate for the survival and growth of their SHGs and simultaneously
nourishing their individual growth. Decision making, communication skills which are
superior indicators of development and empowerment are widely observed in SHGs of
women in Balasore district of Odisha. These women have started taking control over their
lives and situations through attending group meetings, public functions, involving in income
generating activities and joining other women in social causes. Mushroom cultivation is an
income-generating activity. This, on one hand, will develop self-reliance among the rural
women and save them from tiring manual labour, and on the other hand, will provide them
with more opportunities for cultural, societal, and technical education in improving the
quality of family and community life by income generation. The need-based integrated setup
can be used for exploitation of resources of the region for their socioeconomic development.
This would create new avenues of employment for the rural populations. Women as a single
or in groups should be involved in cultivating mushrooms. The main goal of the present paper
is to identify the range of livelihood options persuade by the women SHG’s with special
reference to Mushroom cultivation in Balasore district under OCT
