Description Studies were conducted to know the genetic variability and
character association and path co-efficients for ten quantitative
characters in F2 generation of three crosses in okra. The results indicated
that the PCV and GCV were moderate to high for all the characters
except fruit diameter and fruits per plant in C-I; ridges per plant in C-II
and C-III. High broad sense heritability coupled with high genetic
advance as per cent of mean was recorded for fruit length and primary
branches in C-II and C-III and for fruit length, nodes per plant in C-I
which indicated lower environmental influence on these traits and the
prevalence of additive genes. Simple and early selection schemes would
be effective for the improvement of these traits. The fruit yield was
positively and significantly correlated with fruit weight, fruit length in CI,
fruit weight and days to flowering in C-II and fruit weight and primary
branches in C-III. This indicated that the fruit yield could be improved
through indirect selection of these traits. The fruit weight exerted
maximum direct effect on fruit yield per plant in all the crosses. The
highest inbreeding depression was noticed in the F2 population of C-III
compared to C-I and C-II. The higher frequency of total desirable
transgressive segregents was recovered in C-III compared to C-I and
C-II.
