Description Mungbean is one of the inexpensive sources of vegetable dietary protein in India. It is
known to be affected by several pests and diseases. However, among those, mungbean yellow
mosaic virus (MYMV) is most destructive and has become a major limiting factor for
mungbean cultivation. MYMV infection produced the symptoms like yellow mosaic,
complete yellowing, puckering, stunting of flower stalk bearing few bleached and upturned
pods with immature and misshaped seeds. The survey was undertaken in five northern
districts of Karnataka viz., Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Gulbarga and Bidar. Gulbarga and Bidar
districts recorded maximum incidence of 30.5 per cent whereas Gadag district recorded no
disease incidence. The virus was readily transmissible by whiteflies and grafting but not by
sap, seed or through dodder. The electron microscopic observation showed the presence of
geminate particles in diseased samples of cv. Chinamung.
Epidemiological studies indicated significant and positive correlation between
maximum temperature and both whitefly population and MYMV incidence and also between
whitefly population and MYMV incidence. Among many management practices taken up,
seed treatment with imidacloprid 70 WS (5 g/kg) followed by two sprays of imidacloprid
17.8 SL (0.24 ml/l) at 45 and 60 DAP or two sprays of imidacloprid (0.24 ml/l) alone at 45
and 60 DAP were found effective in controlling whiteflies and in reducing disease incidence.
Screening under field conditions during rabi summer 2004, GG-89 and GG-39 were found
immune among 101 genotypes and during rabi-summer 2005, TM-98-50, TM-97-55 and Co-
5 were found resistant among 25 genotypes. The commonly cultivated variety Chinamung in
Karnataka was found highly susceptible to MYMV.
