Description |
Groundnut, pigeonpea and maize are major bold seeds crop in India. Planting of these bold seeds is a very drudgery and time consuming operation. To address this issue, modification of existing cultivator for planting of bold seeds under ridge and furrow method was taken up. Modification in existing cultivator was done by providing 6 number of M.S. plate, length 800 mm and thickness 3 mm. The width of plate in central 600 mm length was 30 mm while 100 mm length in both the ends was tapering from 30 mm to 20 mm. These 6 plates were fixed in the cultivator in such a manner that they cover the entire width of 1.8 m and formed 10 cm high ridge. The extreme ends were fixed with single plates while the two middle locations were fixed with a couple of plates orienting on opposite directions. The seed and fertilizer tubes were also fixed in such a way that the modified implement was capable of seeding 6 rows of Groundnut with row to row spacing of 30 cm and 3 rows of Maize and Pigeonpea at row to row spacing of 60 cm after blocking suitable orifices. The design of the seed metering cylinder (length 1630 mm and diameter 80 mm) was based on the physical property of the bold seeds. It was made of an M.S. sheet. Seeds are held to the metering hole of the cylinder by suction pressure. The size of circular metering orifice was kept as 2.5 mm. Total 54 orifices having same size was made on the seed metering cylinder at 9 different locations. Each location is having 6 orifices, at an angular distance of 600. The vacuum rod and the metering cylinder are placed concentrically. The length of the rod is 2320 mm and the diameter of rod is 25mm. The size of the hole in the vacuum rod is 6 mm and total no. of holes are 18, placed at 9 different locations (2 on each location at an angular distance of 1800). Vacuum is created in this rod and goes down the vacuum cylinder. The metering cylinder rotates over rod and pick up the seeds through the seed hopper while passing through it. To evaluate the performance of vacuum cylinder pickling % & metering efficiency of metering mechanism were considered under different suction pressure i.e. for groundnut seed 4500 Pa, 5000 Pa and 5500 Pa, for maize seeds 3500 Pa, 4000 Pa and 4500 Pa while for pigeonpea seeds 1500Pa, 2000 Pa and 2500 Pa. On the basis of superior performance the optimum suction pressure inside the vacuum cylinder for groundnut seed was found to be 5000 Pa with a metering efficiency of 106.67 % and maximum picking percentage of 96%. Similarly the optimum suction pressure for maize seed was found to be 4000 Pa with a metering efficiency of 108.88 % and maximum picking percentage of 97% while for pigeonpea seed these values were found to be 2000 Pa, 110 % and 92 %. After laboratory performance the machine is subjected to field performance. The field performance was carried out in a field of dimension 60 m x 61 m. Missing index and multiple index have been worked out. It was found that multiple index is increased with increase in suction pressure. Optimized multiple index value for groundnut, maize and pigeonpea seeds was found to be 6.66%, 6.66% and 10% respectively with respect to the optimized suction pressure of 5.0 kPa, 4.0 kPa and 2.0 kPa. The missing index value was found to increase with decrease in suction pressure. Optimized missing index for groundnut, maize and pigeonpea seeds were found to be 5%, 5% and 3.33% respectively with respect to the optimized suction pressure of 5.0 kPa, 4kPa and 2 kPa. Average field efficiency for sowing of groundnut, maize & pigeonpea was found to be 84.53 while the average time required for sowing of one hectare land (h/ha) was worked out to be 1.60 h/ha. Based on laboratory and field test it was concluded that the modified cultivator for planting of bold seeds under ridge and furrow method is capable and suitable for planting of bold seeds like groundnut, maize & pigeonpea. |
