Description |
The Present investigation was undertaken during rabi, 2005-06, 2006- 07 and 2007-08 at Horticulture Research Farm, Indira Gandhi &ishi Vishwavidyala~a, Raipur (C.G.) to study the type of gene action involved for fruit yield and its components, to ascertain the magnitude of heterosis and inbreeding depression, to determine the extent of variability, heritability and genetic advance for various quantitative characters, to estimate the general combining ability and specific combining ability of parents and hybrids, respectively and finally to study the association of fruit yield and its contributing traits i11 segregating generation (F2). The biological materials used in the study comprised of nine genotypes as lines, viz., Pant T-7, Pant T-8, JTP-02-07, RCMT-I, RCMT-~K, S-229, KS-227, Imp. Shalimar and Local-2; two improved cultivar and a small fruited local cultivar of tomato as testers, viz., DVRT-2, CO- 3, Chcny T; resulting twenty seven cross combinations and their subsequent F2 gcncrations. Combining ability analysis was carried out following the line x tester analysis for days to 50 % flowering, plant height (cm), number of primary branches per plant, number of flowers per cluster, number of h i t s per cluster, fiuit sct (%), number of fruits per plant, average fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm). fruit width (cm), number of locules per fruit, number of calyx per fruit, pericarp thickness (mm), number of seeds per fruit, total soluble solids (%), reducing sugar (%), pH, titrable acidity (%), ascorbic acid (mgil00 ml) and total fiuit per plant. Analysis revealed the predominance of non-additive gene action for all the characters under shldy. This suggests the possibility of heterosis in the present material. Line JTP-02-09 was found good genera] combiner for fruit length (cm), pericarp thickness (mm) and total fruit per plant. Among the testers, tester CO-3 for plant height (cm), average fruit total soluble solids (%), ascorbic acid (mdloO ml) and fruit yield per plant. On the basis of sca effects, the hybrid, Local-21 DVRT-2 and Pant T-Si DVRT-2 for average fruit weight (g) and total fruit yield per plant (kg). The estimates of relative heterosis, heterobeltiosis and standard heterosis were also obtained for fruit yield and its components. A high degree of heterosis was observed for all the characters studied. High level of heterosis for fruit yield per plant was shown by the hybrids, Imp. Shalimarl CO-3, Local-21 DVRT-2, RCMT- I / CO-3 and Pant T-8/ DVRT-2. The association analysis in F2 indicated that number of fruit per cluster, average fruit weight (g), fruit length (cm) and number of locules influenced the total fruit yield per plant with high positive direct effect and significant positive correlation, towards fruit yield per plant which will be exploited for the improvement of Tomato for Chhattisgarh plains. Genotypes viz., Cherry Jashpur and Cheny Raipur, PKM-1, S-22 (UP) and Gaurav showed resistance reaction, hence they will enable to use in future bacterial wilt resistance breeding programme. |
