Description |
A field experiment was conducted on sandy loam soil during rabi 2005-06 at Student’s Farm, College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh to “Studies on The Effect Of Castor Cake and Biofertilizers On Growth and Bulb Yield in onion (Allium Cepa L.).” The experiment was laid out in a RBD with three replications. The treatments consist of three levels of castor cake viz., 4, 6 and 8 t ha-1 alone and in combination with biofertilizers (Azospirillum and Phosphobacteria @ 5kg ha-1), recommended dose of fertilizers and control. The onion cv. Agri Found Light Red was used in the experiment. The study revealed that the plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf area plant-1, dry matter production in leaf and bulb, yield attributes such as bulb length, diameter and yield, the quality parameters such as TSS, reducing sugars and non reducing sugars and NPK uptake in leaf and bulb significantly improved with different levels of castor cake in combination with biofertilizers over same levels of castor cake 16 alone. Further the above characters improved significantly with increases in levels of castor cake from 4 - 8 t ha-1 alone and in combination with biofertilizers. The study revealed that recommended dose of fertilizers and castor cake 8 t ha-1 + Azospirillum + Phosphobacteria @ 5 kg ha-1 recorded higher plant height (47.85 and 47.78 cm) and greater number of leaves (11.8 and 11.6) over rest of the treatments. Further castor cake 8 t ha-1 + Azospirillum + Phosphobacteria @ 5 kg ha-1 recorded higher leaf area (736.82), dry matter accumulation in leaf (3,286.05) and bulb (4,155.71), higher bulb diameter (6.2) and length (4.93) over recommended dose of fertilizers and rest of the treatments. castor cake 8 t ha-1 + Azospirillum + Phosphobacteria @ 5 kg ha-1 (36,612 kg ha-1) and recommended dose of fertilizers (35,604 kg ha-1) recorded higher bulb yield over rest of the treatments but were on par. Castor cake 8 t ha-1 + Azospirillum + Phosphobacteria @ 5 kg ha-1 and recommended dose of fertilizers recorded higher reducing sugars (3.46 and 3.51%) and TSS (11.20 and 11.30) over rest of the treatments but were on par. Further the recommended dose of fertilizers recorded higher non reducing sugars (5.71 %) over rest of the treatments. The treatment, castor cake 8 t ha-1 + Azospirillum + Phosphobacteria @ 5 kg ha-1 recorded significantly higher NPK uptake both in leaf (70.62 Kg ha-1 N, 20.71 Kg ha-1 P2O5 and 84.60 Kg ha-1 K2O and bulb (56.37 Kg ha-1 N, 22.48 Kg ha-1 P2O5 and 99.74 Kg ha-1 K2O) over rest of the treatments except N uptake in bulb where in it was on a par with recommended dose of fertilizers. Among the treatments castor cake 8 t ha-1 + Azospirillum + Phosphobacteria @ 5 kg ha-1 recorded higher gross and net returns compared with other treatments including RDF. The study revealed that castor cake 8 t ha-1 + Azospirillum + Phosphobacteria @ 5 kg ha-1was found as best treatment for obtaining the higher yield and quality produce in onion for red sandy loam soils of Andhra Pradesh. |
