Description The present investigation was carried out in one hundred twenty five horses in and around Bikaner. The faecal samples were examined by direct smear, flotation and sedimentation methods for detection of any of parasitic infection based on the presence of parasitic egg/larva by any or all of these methods. The clinical sings in gastrointestinal parasites infested horses included weakness, dullness, anorexia, diarrhoea, rough hair coat, loss of body weight, anaemia, poor body condition, loss of appetite and reduced in work performance. The overall mean ± SE values of eggs per gram of faeces in 20 horses affected with gastrointestinal parasites in the present study were 805 ± 48.38 with a range of 400-1200 egg per gram. The overall therapeutic efficacy of ivermectin on 15th day post treatment was 97.82 per cent against gastrointestinal parasites.Haemato-biochemical studies in all twenty horses positive for gastrointestinal parasites revealed significant decrease in haemoglobin, packed cell volume, total erythrocyte counts, lymphocytes, serum albumin, albumin globulin ratio, serum glucose and significant increase was showed for eosinophil, total serum protein and serum globulin when compared with apparently healthy horses. Malondialdehyde level were elevated in gastrointestinal parasite infested horses whereas reduced glutathione and catalase level were low. After 15th day of treatment increased value of Malondialdehyde returned to normal whereas decreased values of reduced glutathione and Catalase were elevated.
