Description The present study was conducted in the Gulbarga district of Karnataka
state during 2011-12. To assess the Perception of climate change among farm
women and its impact on the production of Red Gram and also to identify the
constraints experienced by farm women to initiate adaptation measures. Visible
variation in the rainfall and temperature was observed in Gulbarga district
hence, these climate parameters were considered for the study.
The findings revealed that, 71.66 per cent of farm women had medium
level followed by low (18.34%) and high (10%) level of perception in the changes
in rainfall before the year 2005. Majority of the farm women (74.16%) had
medium level followed by high (24.17%) and low (1.67%) level of perception
about changes in the rainfall after the year 2005. Though the actual data
indicates that was no much changes in the rainfall after the year 2005. But
farm women perceived that, there was decrease in the rainfall after the year
2005. It may be because, they were changed from Red Gram to high water
requirement crops and also shift of monsoon after the year 2005. The results of
the study indicates that, majority (81.66%) of farm women had medium level
followed by high (15%) and low (3.34%) level of perception about changes in the
temperature before the year 2005. Majority (74.16%) of farm women had
medium followed by low (20%) and high (5.84%) level of perception level after
the year 2005. Majority of the farm women perceived that, changes in the
month of land preparations, date of sowing, germination percentage of seeds,
crop growth, flowering time, pod formation and number of pods and incidence
of pest were more after the year 2005, due to the variation in the (Rainfall and
temperature) climate change on Red Gram. With respect to adaptation
measures before the year 2005, (55.84%) of farm women belongs to medium
level category followed by low (22.50%) and high (21.66%) level of adaptation
category. After the year 2005 majority of the farm women (41.67%) had adopted
high number of adaptation measures followed by medium (35.83%) and low
(22.50%) level of adaptation to climate change. Majority of the farm women had
initiated goat rearing, followed by sheep rearing, dairy and other subsidiary
occupations. Majority of the farm women family members migrated to cities in
search of better job and other facilities. The major constraints experienced by
farm women while initiating adaptation measures were, non-availability of
labour and higher wage rate, followed by difficult to work in the field due to
severe temperature, higher cost of agriculture inputs and low price for the
produce in the market. they have also given important suggestions to overcome
the effects of climate change viz., Early warning has to be given to the farm
women about environmental changes followed by subsidies has to be given for
the crops, and development department should ensure supplying of production
inputs at appropriate time in the village.
